TROPOS SELECTED AS A SEMI-FINALIST AND “TOP 15 UTILITY TECHNOLOGY” IN THE UTILITY TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE

Tropos Chosen From a Field of 100 Smart Grid Vendors

SUNNYVALE, CA -- April 7, 2011 -Tropos Networks, the best-of-breed provider of wireless IP broadband networks for the smart grid, is pleased to announce it has been selected by the Clean Technology & Sustainable Industries (CTSI) Organization as a semi-finalist and “Top 15 Utility Technology” in their Utility Technology Challenge (UTC). Out of 100 applicants, Tropos was chosen by a committee with representatives from Austin Energy, the City of Anaheim, Lockheed Martin, National Grid and Northeast Utilities.

Communications networks are a key foundational component of the smart grid. As utilities strive to improve operational efficiencies, integrate renewables, and meet future demand for power, reliable wireless communications networks are essential for connecting a wide range of smart grid devices. Tropos’ wireless broadband technologies enable utilities to economically aggregate communications for multiple smart grid applications across broad coverage areas.  Utilities use Tropos’ networks for many strategic applications including, distribution automation, AMI backhaul, substation security, and mobile utility workforce automation.

“We are honored to have been selected as a semi-finalist by CTSI for the Utility Technology Challenge,” said Tom Ayers, president and CEO of Tropos Networks.  “Consistent with this recognition is that Tropos is experiencing significant demand for our unique technology as utilities seek a reliable, high-performance, secure and manageable foundation upon which to build communications for their smart grid.”

"The UTC committee is seeking smart grid communications solutions and Tropos Networks emerged as a top technology of interest during our review process," said Clean Technology and Sustainable Industries CEO, Patricia Glaza.  "We look forward to their presentation to the committee in June along with the other semifinalists."

As a CTSI semi-finalist, Tropos will present an overview of its smart grid network solution to the selection committee at the TechConnect World Conference & Expo 2011 in Boston on June 14th.  The conference addresses advancements in traditional technologies, emerging technologies and clean business practices applied towards a more sustainable future.  More than 5,000 representatives are expected to attend including utilities, investors, and vendors.
