TROPOS NETWORKS LAUNCHES EMBEDDED SMART GRID COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM AT DISTRIBUTECH 2012,
BOOTH #1301

New Tropos 1410-B wireless mesh router and bridge module will debut at show

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. -- January 19, 2012 – Tropos Networks® today announced that it will launch a new integration program for embedded Smart Grid communications modules at DistribuTECH 2012, booth #1301, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, January 24 – 26. The company will debut its recently announced Tropos® 1410 wireless mesh router and wireless bridge for field area communication networks at the show. The board level variant of the product, the Tropos 1410-B, is designed for integration with and into Smart Grid devices such as smart transformers, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), energy storage devices, AMI collectors, and distribution automation endpoints for more cost effective and secure deployment of communications to those devices.

The new product line extends advanced enterprise-class security to utility applications such as advanced metering infrastructure and distribution automation, providing an integrated firewall and IPsec VPN in each unit. Further, it provides communications for these applications for as little as half the cost of competitive proprietary, low-speed wireless networks per connected automation endpoint. By supporting utility protocols, including DNP3, SEL Mirrored Bits and IEC 61850, the Tropos 1410 facilitates integration of legacy endpoints for distribution automation and other applications into modern, IP-based field area communication networks, avoiding stranded assets. When the Tropos 1410-B with wireless mesh routing capability is integrated into an IED or other Smart Grid device, the device helps to form the field area communications network.

Tropos representatives will be available to discuss current partners and customers planning to use the integrated Tropos 1410-B as well as the opportunity for manufacturers of complementary Smart Grid products to become Tropos 1410-B development partners.

“The Tropos 1410 creates a unique value proposition for utilities and their suppliers,” said Rob Pilgrim, Vice President of Business and Corporate Development for Tropos Networks. “Integrating a Tropos 1410-B module into a  field Smart Grid device not only provides communications to the device at a competitive price, but can also increase the performance and reliability of the overall field area communication network when it is operated as a mesh router.”
